Do I need an A2 Certificate of Competence (A2 CofC) for my DJI mini ?

People are always asking me do I have to get an A2 CofC now I have bought my DJI mini drone.

And the honest answer is………..No, you do not need to get one, but in some circumstances you would be crazy not to get one.

First of all, we are assuming you have an operator and flyer id, if not please use this hyperlink.

Now, please download CAP 2012 . You should print off CAP2012 and take it on all your flights to show anyone who questions what you are doing with your drone in relation to flying near uninvolved persons.

So lets imagine we have a DJI mini 1, 2 3, or 4 weighing 249g. As the drone is under 250g then you will see in the A1 row that you can fly over uninvolved people but not over crowds. So you have alot of freedom!!!!! In the right hand row “competency” it does not say you must have a A2CofC so crack on without one.

Just be aware you are not allowed to endanger any person or property or other aircraft with your drone.

This is where it gets a bit silly. You still have to stay away from Geographical zones i.e. military bases, power station, firing ranges etc. but without doing a A2 CofC course you would not know anything in depth about these and how to ask to fly in them. The A2 CofC course covers all of this.

So even though you do not need to do the A2CofC course, we would always recommend doing the online course just to get a better understanding of where you can and cant fly. The CDT online A2CofC course is £99, it gives you a wealth of knowledge and will help you in your Commercial Drone career.
