Vodafone has used a mobile network to undertake a UAV delivery

At Portland Bill Coastwatch in Dorset, Vodafone set its sights on delivering a package by Drone.

Being in a remote location, the island utilises the work of over 74 volunteers in conjunction with the fire brigade and police..

The 4G network allowed the drone, which had a modem on board, to be monitored in real time from long range without the need for it to stay in direct range of radio signals like conventional flight.

Vodafone says that the tech used in this flight could be a sign of things to come as the imminent arrival of low-latency 5G could make drone delivery more plausible in built up areas too.

Scott Petty, Vodafone UK’s CTO, said: “Technology plays an increasingly important role in connecting people over Christmas and flying a drone over 4G for the first time gives us a glimpse of what Christmas deliveries of the future might look like.”
